REPORT ON INVESTIGATION AND DISCOVERY DAY MARCH 12TH 2024

Investigation & Discovery Day 12th March 2024

Science & Society celebrated the 11th Anniversary of this event in Science Week with four excellent speakers and an audience of 90 Members and friends.

Two of the speakers had a similar theme around the challenges of climate change. Professor Steve Burnage spoke about the use of Hydrogen as a fuel to replace natural gas for domestic heating, fuel for transport and use in industry.

Dr Jamie Craggs spoke about his work to restore and regrow reef- building corals damaged by “bleaching”, overfishing and the rise in water temperatures. He said he feared that some reef systems have been irretrievably damaged.

Dr Samantha Cook gave an illustrated talk on research into the use of pesticides on farmed crops using some that are less harmful to wildlife and the environment whilst helping to increase crop yields to feed a growing world population.

The fourth speaker was Dr Jeni Tennison founder of her own company specialising in all things data. She talked about how Artificial Intelligence is affecting and will affect all our lives in the future but women will be most adversely affected. There will be many ways in which A I can make improvements but she emphasised we must be wary of its use in” scams “and deception by voice mimicry used to obtain personal information.

There was also a short presentation by all three Climate Ambassadors.
